Top 3 Most Helpful Apps whilst in London

Posted August 11, 2016

So for all you travellers who are coming over to our wonderful city of London, here are our top three marvellous apps you can use which will make your life easier while exploring.

Number One: CityMapper

I can guarantee you this app will help you out.  CityMapper is a full journey planning app available on both iDevices and Android. Not only does this wonderful app show you the tube map, it will also tell you how to get from point A to point B in a number of ways including buses and trains. It will give you the closest station or bus stop and the route to take, considering the fastest and, or the easiest ways to get around. In addition to that, it shows you the total price of each alternative. It is amazing! it will make getting round this huge city a whole lot easier. To use the app you only need an initial WIFI or data connection when planning your journey and arguably the most wonderful thing about CityMapper is that you can save the routes for offline use while out and about.

Number Two: Uber

Uber is used all over the world but especially by the staff here at Astor Hostels. Uber has a very simple sign up process for first time users and lets you order a car transfer home right away. Payment is made straight through your card over the internet that is linked to the account, so you no longer need to have foreign exchange at the end of the night to pay for a taxi. Not only is Uber convenient they also offer extremely good prices compared to most taxi firms and other private transfer companies, especially in Central London. Uber is also highly secure. When you request a car and a match is made, it instantly tells you who is driving the car, what kind of car it is and the estimated price if you have selected a location. This is the largest reason why it’s highly recommended by us here, as it can be a bit of a dangerous situation getting into an unmarked taxi (which happens a lot in London) but with Uber you know they will only send you the same friendly and reliable drivers.

Number Three: ATM Finder

The final app that I would most definitely suggest for any tourist or local to have would be the ‘ATM Finder’ app. Here in London you always seem to need to have cash rather than paying for stuff on card so this app tells you exactly where the closest ATM is. It gives you a list of all of the closest ATMs and how far away they are from you and how to get there. The app is completely free and more helpful than you imagine. I find myself constantly wanting an ATM and it just makes life that little easier.
