Festival of Love – Southbank Centre
“Festival of Love explores and celebrates the complexity of human relationships in all their forms” and it does it through art.
In the next 2 months (until Sunday 31 August) the Southbank Centre will be home of several free events, differently-themed weekends, performances, poetry, talks and pop-ups, all about the same big theme: LOVE.
The festival, which celebrates the Same Sex Couple Act, celebrates seven Ancient Greek definitions of love with a series of themed weekends. Visitors will be able to explore and embrace all the different types of love with events, activities and workshops.
The themes for the next weekends are:
Storge 12 – 13 July: Family Love, such as the love a parent has for a child
Urban 26 – 27 July: Celebrating Street Culture
Pragma 2 – 3 August: Love that develops over a long period of time
Philia 9 – 10 August: Love for people we strive with to achieve a shared goal
Philautia 16 – 17 August: The love we give to ourselves
Eros and Ludus 23 – 24 August: Flirting and Romance
The last weekend is the “Big Wedding” one and all couples, gay or straight, young or old, are invited to marry or renew their vows on the stage of the iconic Royal Festival Hall. There will be eight ceremonies over the weekend and each ceremony will last for 90 minutes and comprise of 20 couples who will all declare their vows separately in front of their family, guests and registrars.
If you don’t have a partner yet, don’t panic: you still have a couple of months to fall crazily in love with someone and get married at the end of the summer!
